I am currently reading a”must read” for all Christians called What Saint Paul Really Said by N.T. Wright. In the book Bishop Wright makes the claim that T.S.Eliot posed the following question, “Was our society founded on anything other than compound interest”? That’s a PARAPHRASE of the material on page 155. It’s time for you to weigh in…whether you live in the US of A or Canada, I want to hear from you… What’s our economy and society founded on??? I will blog about this topic once I feel that I have heard from enough of you…

thanks for your thoughts and prayers
Our current society and economy seem to me to be founded on the principle of “If I want it, I deserve to have it!” That ‘serves’ (heavy sarcasm, for it has become our Master) us and very well serves the merchants.
I recently discovered your wife’s blog and am reading thru the archives, where I found this reference to yours.
Thank you for your willingness to share your points of view with the rest of us. I for one, am enjoying the read.

majority rule, i would say. certainly not freedom for all. freedom for the majority, yes.
I think it is founded on the flesh – seeking and indluging in whatever pleasures to which we feel inclined, seeking and accumulating earthly riches, pride and advancing ourselves and receiving admiration and envy from others. Independence, because we don’t see it in many people anymore that they want to submit in obedience to God, or even believe that God says anything in particular that they should do or not do (other than murder, and that I guess only if it’s a healthy adult and not an unborn, elderly, or disabled/sickly person).
I think at one time our society was founded on some good principles – freedom of conscience and religious practice, for one. Christian based lovingkindness to our fellow man. When I read writings of the 1800′s, we seemed pretty stable still. Few people in North American today even know enough scripture and historical context to understand how bad off we really are today.
Great response…..thanks for your thoughts!
